From its inception, the Japan ICU Foundation has been providing ICU with faculty support. More recently, the Foundation has focused on three programs, a Visiting Scholars Program, a Visiting Professorship and the endowed Othmer Chair in Sciences.
The Japan ICU Foundation's Visiting Scholars Program was initiated in 2002 in response to an ICU request for assistance in inviting influential scholars from abroad to ICU for short periods of time, ranging from several days to two weeks. The visiting scholars are hosted by ICU faculty members and generally stay on campus at the Maple Grove Guest House. While actively interacting with the ICU community, the Visiting Scholars also deliver lectures, participate in classroom discussion and meet informally with students, faculty and staff. ICU and the Japan ICU Foundation jointly cover transportation costs, housing and an honorarium.
The Japan ICU Foundation, from its establishment in 1948, has had a program to provide financial support for short-term visiting professors who teach courses at ICU for one term or sometimes up to several years. In 2004, the Visiting Professors Program was established to give special attention to the importance of inviting established scholars to teach courses at ICU for one academic term. Not only do these visiting professors bring highly stimulating new thinking to the campus, but they also challenge the university to remain on the cutting edge of innovative approaches to higher education. ICU and the Japan ICU Foundation jointly cover transportation costs, housing and salary.
