ICU doctoral student Jenni Fajardo received a JICUF grant of ¥140,000 in winter term 2016 to organize a series of workshops to help ICU students improve their presentation and business communication skills. Five workshops took place from May 19th to June 16th, with a different speaker and topic in each session. We asked participants to share their experiences.
ICU hosted the 13th Workshop on Altaic Formal Linguistics (WAFL 13) from May 25th to 28th. Senior Associate Professor Tomoyuki Yoshida received a grant from JICUF last year and played a central role in bringing the workshop to Japan for only the second time in its history. The four-day conference which had close to 100 participants was dedicated to former ICU linguistics professor Dr. Kazuko Inoue, who recently passed away.
On May 27th, ICU Senior Associate Professor Eckhard Hitzer (physics) organized a one-day workshop on campuus entitled “Sustainable University Development with a Focus on Renewable Energy (SUDre 2017).” The workshop explored how universities could switch to renewable energy, and was partially funded by a grant from JICUF. The successful event was attended by close to 120 people.
ICU graduate student Eleazar Puguon was awarded a JICUF student grant of ¥75,000 for his project, “Fiestas sa Pinas.” Together with fellow graduate student Jenni Fajardo, he planned a Filipino Night on May 16th, an event to introduce Filipino culture, history and society to the ICU community.
ICU Professor Eckhard Hitzer received a JICUF faculty program grant to host the “Sustainable University Development Workshop – How Universities Can Promote Sustainability through Renewable Energy.” The workshop will be held on Saturday, May 27th on the ICU campus. The event is open to the public.
For the past few years, the Japan ICU Foundation has been sponsoring Japan Bowl, an academic competition for American high school students who are studying Japanese. This year, JICUF staff were joined by representatives of ICU’s Admissions Center in this event in Washington, DC.
For the last few years, the Japan ICU Foundation has been offering Study Abroad scholarshipsto ICU undergraduate students who spend their junior year in the United States. This year, we awarded scholarships to five students studying at the University of California (UC) Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, Middlebury College and Guilford College. Assistant Professor Hiromichi Matsuda who teaches law at ICU recently led a group of undergraduate students to participate in the 12th Space Law Moot Court Competition. ICU student, Ms. Chizuru Yamazaki was awarded the third best speaker prize. JICUF supported Professor Matsuda’s team through a grant.
Each year, the Japan ICU Foundation provides about $200,000 for scholarships at ICU. Bhuwan Shankar Bhatt is a doctoral student who is receiving a JICUF scholarship. We interviewed him to get to know him better.
