From June 2nd to 4th, the Japan ICU Foundation and ICU’s Social Science Research Institute hosted the Rethinking Peace Studies (RPS) conference in the Kiyoshi Togasaki Memorial Dialogue House on the ICU campus.
The Japan ICU Foundation Board of Trustees welcomed two new members in April, Dr. Masako Shinn and Dr. Kenji Kushida. Learn a little about their careers and interests.
Aomi Kuwayama, junior student at ICU, was awarded a grant of ¥150,000 during the spring term to cover the cost of field work in the Philippines. The purpose of her research is to investigate educational inequality between urban and rural areas in the Philippines. Here is our interview with Aomi.
Senior Associate Professor of linguistics, Dr. Tomoyuki Yoshida, is one of five ICU faculty members to receive a grant from the JICUF during the spring term. He has been awarded ¥600,000 to host the Workshop on Altaic Formal Linguistics (WAFL) at ICU in spring 2017. Dr. Yoshida was kind enough to answer a few questions about the program.
From July 5th to 29th, we will host the 3rd annual Global Link program here in NYC! This year, we are excited to welcome 12 undergraduate students from ICU and spend an event-packed 4 weeks with them. Ms. Shiori Kitajima, ICU alumna and recent Teacher’s College, Columbia University graduate, has also joined as an intern to help us run the program.
The 2016 National Japan Bowl was held April 14 & 15, 2016 at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Sakura Matsuri, the nation’s largest one-day Japanese cultural event, was held the next day in Washington, D.C. It was my pleasure to represent the Foundation at both events this year.
In 2014 the Japan ICU Foundation launched two programs, Global Link and Rethinking Peace Studies. Global Link is a summer program for ICU students in New York City and Rethinking Peace Studies is an academic program that has involved ICU faculty along with scholars and practitioners from around the world.
