Through the Faculty Grants program, JICUF supports projects that align with our mission of nurturing global citizens. We encourage faculty to design projects that emphasize collaboration, cultivate cultural awareness, and develop the skills and mindset necessary for an interconnected world. JICUF prioritizes projects that have a global dimension and that benefit students.

In the past several years JICUF has supported a wide variety of projects. Examples include:

International and domestic field trips
On-campus academic convenings
Student skill-building workshops
Curriculum development
Visiting professionals and scholars

ELIGIBILITY

All full-time faculty and educational staff are eligible to apply.

How to Apply

Faculty may apply for funding twice a year (see timeline below). The application form is accessible at any time on this website.

Step 1: Applicant Meets with JICUF Staff to Discuss Project (Recommended)
Step 2: Applicant Submits a Proposal
Step 3: JICUF Evaluates Proposals and Announces Results

The following criteria will be used to evaluate Faculty Grant applications:

Project Goals
– The goals are clear and easily understood.
– The goals align with and advance JICUF’s mission.
– The project has an global dimension.
– The project benefits students.

Project Plan
– The actions are clear and specific.
– The actions are relevant to the goal(s).

Project Assessment
– The actions are achievable and measurable.

Budget
– Project expenses are clearly stated and described.
– Project expenses are justified and reasonable.

During the application process, JICUF may have some additional questions about the project. In such cases, JICUF staff may request a meeting to discuss to discuss these questions.

Upon completing the review of all proposals, JICUF staff make recommendations to the JICUF Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees approves all final award decisions.

Funding Cycles & Timelines

Faculty can apply for funding twice a year, in the Spring and Fall Terms. Faculty may access the application at any time on this website, and applications will be screened and awarded according to the following schedule each year.

Budget Guidelines
JICUF may not fund all of the budget items that are requested.

Funding cannot be used on the following items:
- Personal electronic equipment
- Conference attendance
- Hiring of external staff/interns. (On a case-by-case basis, JICUF may approve the compensation for student interns to help with the implementation of a grant.)
If an applicant plans to invite guests to the ICU campus to participate in the project, JICUF will provide the following support:
- Up to two weeks of housing at Dialogue House.
- For International Guests: Round-trip economy-class airfare to Japan and airport transportation.
- For Domestic Guests: Round-trip travel between the guest’s home and ICU.
- A daily allowance of ¥5,000 per person to cover meals and local transportation.
- A one-time honorarium of ¥30,000 upon completion of a qualified activity at ICU. Qualified activities may include giving a public lecture, making a keynote presentation at a symposium, leading a workshop, etc.
Student Participation in Faculty Projects

ICU students should have equal opportunity to participate in faculty-led projects. JICUF also recognizes that some projects are catered to students either in specific majors or at certain points in their academic careers. Faculty applicants with projects that include student participation must explain how they will select students, and if participation is not open to the entire student body, they must explain why that is the case.

In addition, JICUF would like to ensure that all students are able to participate regardless of socioeconomic status. Students should not pay more than ¥20,000 to participate in faculty projects receiving JICUF support.
Reporting Requirements
Taxation

Faculty are responsible for determining the taxability of the funding they receive and pay any necessary taxes on the amount received. JICUF is not able to provide counsel on tax matters and recommends students speak with their local tax office or accountant.

US citizens, US green card holders, or US residents for tax purposes are required to submit a W-9 form to JICUF. Non-US citizens and non-US residents conducting activities in the United States are required to submit a W-8BEN and JICUF is required to withhold up to 30% of the award. Non-US citizens and non-US residents conducting activities outside of the United States are not required to submit anything to JICUF.
