JICUF’s mission is to work with ICU to nurture global citizens who contribute to the well-being of humanity. Since the launch of the Syrian Scholars Initiative in 2017, JICUF has increasingly focused on providing opportunities for refugees to access higher education in Japan. In 2022, JICUF launched the Japan-Ukraine University Pathways program in collaboration with Pathways Japan. In the same year, JICUF began funding Pathways Japan’s Japanese Language School Program for Afghan, Syrian and Ukrainian refugees.
JICUF is also a founding member of the Global Task Force on Third-Country Education Pathways, the Japan Education Pathways Network, and has convened and participated in several international conferences on education pathways. In 2024, JICUF launched Refugee Education Japan, an initiative that aims to increase language and higher education opportunities for refugee students in Japan.
