JICUF Sponsors Carnegie Council Global Ethics Conference at ICU
On June 5-6 the Japan ICU Foundation will be sponsoring a Carnegie Council Global Ethics Conference in the Kiyoshi Togasaki Memorial Dialogue House at ICU. The Global Ethics Conference is part of the Carnegie Council’s Global Ethics Network and will feature keynote addresses from former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Dr. Michael Ignatieff, the Centennial Chair of the Carnegie Council and Professor at Harvard University, amongst others.
The Global Ethics Conference will be examining the theme of “Global Ethics: Nuclear Energy, Technology and Risk,” and the symposium will serve as an ethical inquiry into the viability of a global ethic with a special focus on nuclear weapons, nuclear energy, and technological risks in the 21st century. Based in New York City, the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs is uniquely committed to examining the ethical component to global issues. As stated in their mission statement, their aim “is to enlarge the audience for the simple but powerful message that ethics matter, regardless of place, origin, or belief.”
Stemming from this mission, the Carnegie Council recently created the Global Ethics Network, which seeks to provide “a platform for educational institutions and individuals around the world to create and share interactive multimedia resources that explore the ethical dimensions of international affairs.” Along with creating a platform, the Carnegie Council has also selected a group of Global Ethics Fellows and Ethics Fellows for the Future from universities around the world. In 2012, throug the recommendation of the Japan ICU Foundation, Carnegie Council Senior Program Director and Senior Fellow Devin Stewart reached out to ICU to inquire about joining the Global Ethics Network and nominating an Ethics Fellow. ICU was delighted at the invitation and recommended Dr. Katsuhiko Mori as a Fellow.
Dr. Mori, a professor in ICU’s Department of Politics and International Relations, has been a regular participant in Global Ethical Network gatherings hosted by the Carnegie Council even since. In 2014 Professor Mori and Devin Stewart approached the Japan ICU Foundation to inquire about a possible grant for a Global Ethics Conference on the ICU campus. The grant application was approved in early 2015 and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to sponsor such an important gathering at ICU.
