Dr. Hisato Yamaguchi majored in physics at ICU and graduated in 2001. He currently resides in New Mexico and works as a researcher at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Please enjoy his alumni story.

Highlights from My Time in Japan – Paul Hastings
JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings moved to Japan with his family this July and is currently living on the ICU campus. This is his report for his first fourth months at ICU.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: Naho Yoshikawa – Public vs Private: Social-Emotional Learning of Students in Rural Kenya
This spring, third year Education and International Relations student Naho Yoshikawa was awarded ¥316,523 via the JICUF Student Travel Fund. Her proposal was to research the relationship between students’ self-concept and learning environments in Oloitokitoki village, Kenya, using psychological and pedagogical observation methods this July.
Rethinking Peace Book Launch Held at ICU
On October 25th, JICUF and the ICU Rotary Peace Center hosted a Rethinking Peace book launch. The book emerges from Rethinking Peace Studies, a three-year project funded by JICUF, and the edited volume features 14 chapters written by authors who participated in one of the project.
2019 U.S. Scholars Initiative Scholarship Recipients Matriculate at ICU
Luke Wilson and Nicolas Correa are the second cohort of recipients of JICUF’s United States Scholars Initiative (USSI) scholarship. USSI aims to increase the number of degree-seeking undergraduate students from the United States at ICU. This merit-based scholarship provides full-tuition support for four years of undergraduate study at ICU.

Alumnus Dr. Yasuyuki Horie Visits ICU
ICU alumnus (‘61) Dr. Yasuyuki Horie and his late wife endowed the Horie Takematsu & Koh Scholarship at ICU several years ago. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a top student in the natural sciences. Dr. Horie, who currently lives in New Mexico, visited ICU for the first time in 58 years on Tuesday, September 24.
JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings Speaks at Institute of International Education Workshop in Vietnam
Earlier this month, JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings was invited by the Institute of International Education to speak at a workshop in Vietnam on the topic of refugee higher education. JICUF’s scholarship program for Syrian students, the Syrian Scholars Initiative, is the only private sponsorship program hosted by a university in Japan and has garnered much interest among the international community. ICU Professor Osamu Arakaki also participated in the workshop.
JICUF Hosts 70th Anniversary Dinner in NYC
On Friday, September 13th, JICUF hosted a 70th Anniversary Dinner at Riverside Church in New York City. 113 alumni and friends attended the event from the New York Metro Area, Boston, Washington D.C. and beyond. Chair of the ICU Board and alumnus Hirotaka Takeuchi was the keynote speaker.
