Alumnus Dr. Yasuyuki Horie Visits ICU
ICU alumnus (‘61) Dr. Yasuyuki Horie and his late wife endowed the Horie Takematsu & Koh Scholarship at ICU several years ago. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a top student in the natural sciences. Dr. Horie, who currently lives in New Mexico, visited ICU for the first time in 58 years on Tuesday, September 24.
JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings Speaks at Institute of International Education Workshop in Vietnam
Earlier this month, JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings was invited by the Institute of International Education to speak at a workshop in Vietnam on the topic of refugee higher education. JICUF’s scholarship program for Syrian students, the Syrian Scholars Initiative, is the only private sponsorship program hosted by a university in Japan and has garnered much interest among the international community. ICU Professor Osamu Arakaki also participated in the workshop.
JICUF Hosts 70th Anniversary Dinner in NYC
On Friday, September 13th, JICUF hosted a 70th Anniversary Dinner at Riverside Church in New York City. 113 alumni and friends attended the event from the New York Metro Area, Boston, Washington D.C. and beyond. Chair of the ICU Board and alumnus Hirotaka Takeuchi was the keynote speaker.
JICUF Hosts Global Link 2019 Summer Program for ICU Students
In July, JICUF welcomed twelve ICU undergraduate students for our Global Link summer program. During the four weeks, from July 5th to 26th, the students participated in office visits, professional roundtables, networking events, volunteer activities and professional skills workshops in New York City and Washington, D.C. The activities, collaboratively scheduled by JICUF and the wide network of ICU alumni and friends, aimed to inspire the students as they contemplate their future career paths.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: Education Program in Peru
In fall 2018, fourth-year student at ICU Kazuna Yamamoto (CLA ‘19) received ¥510,000 through the JICUF Grants Initiative for her project, “Educate For ICU Ambassador Program.” This past March, Kazuna brought 4 ICU students and 2 non-ICU students to organize, conduct, and facilitate educational STEM and English workshops in 3 schools in Trujillo, Peru.
JICUF Executive Director to Work at ICU for a Year
JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings will move to Mitaka this summer with his family to live and work at ICU for one year. ICU will be providing Paul with an office on campus and he and his family will live in a faculty house.
JICUF Staff Attends Conference on Refugee Higher Education in Berlin
On June 18th and 19th, Aki Takada, Associate Director of JICUF, attended a conference titled “The Other 1%: Refugees at Institutions for Higher Education Worldwide” in Berlin, Germany. She introduced JICUF’s Syrian Scholars Initiative in a workshop on Financing Models and Strategic Partnerships.
JICUF Grantee Highlight – House Building Camp in Nepal
In fall 2018, third-year ICU student Hotaka Omata (second-year at the time) received a JICUF grant of ¥424,000 for his project to build housing in Nepal. Hotaka and seven other ICU members of the FIWC (Friendship International Work Camp), an inter-collegiate volunteer group, traveled to Ramche village, Nepal, which has yet to fully recover from the devastating April 2015 earthquake. JICUF interviewed three ICU students who took part in the trip.
ICU Graduate School Launches Diplomacy and International Public Service Program (DIPS)
In April, the ICU Graduate School launched the Diplomacy and International Public Service Program (DIPS). DIPS targets ICU graduate students and students in the Five-year Program who are interested in pursuing careers in diplomacy or international organizations. A kick-off event was held on the ICU campus on Saturday, April 20th.
Alumni Stories No. 13 – Ms. Noriko Iwase
Ms. Noriko Iwase, who graduated from ICU in 1974, currently lives in Washington, D.C. After a long career at the United Nations and World Bank, she decided to pursue a different path. A generous supporter of JICUF and ICU, she shared her ICU story with us.
