Long serving JICUF trustees Delores Roeder and Samuel Shepherd officially retired from the board of trustees on March 31, 2019. New trustees Machi Fukuyama Dilworth and Katherine Tegtmeyer Pak joined the board on April 1.

Next month, ICU Professor Emeritus and former JICUF Trustee Ben Duke’s new book “Dr. David Murray: Superintendent of Education in the Empire of Japan 1873-1879” will be published by Rutgers University Press. In this article, Dr. Duke explains some of the history and inspiration for the book.
ICU Confers an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa, on Senator John Davison Rockefeller, IV
On Friday, March 15 ICU President Junko Hibiya conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, on Senator John Davison Rockefeller, IV. The ceremony was held at the Old Ambassador’s Residence at the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: “Nihongo de Itadakimasu” Event
Last December, JICUF Student Activity Fund recipient and ICU student Akiyo Sasaki and co-organizers Machi Niiya, Ayumi Murase, Rio Kokuta, and Shimon Hibi began the “Nihongo de Itadakimasu: Cultural Exchange through Japanese Language and Food” project. The aim of the project was to promote intercultural communication by inviting ICU students of all Japanese levels to mingle with each other and learn about Japanese culture.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: Wheelchair Basketball Workshop
On February 20th (Wednesday) and 22nd (Friday), Ms. Mina Takanashi, Instructor in ICU’s Health and Physical Education Program, hosted a Wheelchair Basketball Workshop in the V Gym at ICU. This was the second “parasport event” organized at ICU, the first being the Blind Soccer Workshop organized by Instructor Hiroshi Yamauchi last January.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: “Discussing the Future of ICU” Project
Yuki Moritani, a fourth-year student at ICU, planned an event with three of his friends to discuss ICU’s philosophy, history and future. The event titled “Discussing the Future of ICU” was held on Tuesday, February 26th. Yuki was awarded 75,000 yen from the JICUF Student Support Funds last fall.
2019 Spring JICUF Undergraduate Research Day Held at ICU
The Spring 2019 JICUF Undergraduate Research Day (URD) was held on February 15th at ICU. 46 fourth-year students presented their research posters. The event was organized by Associate Professor Seunghun Lee with a grant from JICUF.

Interview with ICU Student Naoya Johnson: Helping Exonerate an Innocent Man in the U.S.
Naoya Johnson is a fourth-year student at ICU who studied abroad at Georgetown University during his third year. While at Georgetown, Naoya took a class titled “Making an Exoneree” in which students studied law by actively assisting the appeals of those in need. Through this class, Naoya and two other students helped exonerate Valentino Dixon, who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for 27 years. Last December, JICUF Executive Director Paul Hastings had a chance to interview Naoya.
