JICUF Grantee Highlight: Linguistics Research Project in Hokkaido by Michinori Suzuki
Fourth-year ICU student Michinori Suzuki received a JICUF student travel fund of ¥651,800 last fall to conduct two research trips to Hokkaido. Michinori majors in linguistics, and we asked him about his research on voiced plosives in two Japanese dialects.

JICUF Hosts Global Link Summer Program for ICU Students
In July, JICUF welcomed twelve ICU undergraduate students for our Global Link summer program. During the four weeks, from July 5th to 27th, the students were exposed to global careers in New York City and Washington, D.C. Calling on the wide network of ICU alumni and friends in both cities, JICUF organized office visits, professional roundtables, networking events, volunteer activities and professional skills workshops. The activities aimed to inspire the students as they contemplate their future career paths.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: Japan-Philippines Student Summit
Associate Professor Allen Kim (sociology) received a faculty program grant from JICUF last fall to hold the Japan-Philippines Student Summit (JPSS) this spring. Six students travelled to the Philippines with Professor Kim from March 7th to 15th. Below is a condensed version of the grant report from Professor Kim.
Alumni Stories No.9 – Mr. Darrell Clausen
Mr. Darrell Clausen studied at ICU in the 1970s as a four-year regular student. He currently resides in Southern California and is an active member of the alumni chapter there. He shared his unique story with us this month.
ICU Team Wins Award at the 29th International Moot Court Japan Cup
A team of ICU students participated in the 29th International Law Moot Court Competition Japan Cup held on July 7th and 8th, and received the Fighting Spirit Award. The students took the International Moot Court course taught by Assistant Professor Hiromichi Matsuda. JICUF has been supporting Professor Matsuda’s initiative to send ICU students to moot court competitions through the faculty grants program.
JICUF Grantee Highlight: Quantitative Analysis Hackathon Held at ICU in Late May
JICUF awarded Dr. Kaori Sato, instructor in the Health and Physical Education program at ICU, a ¥300,000 grant for her project, “Organizing a Hackathon for Quantitative Analysis with Harvard PhD Students.” Held in late May, the workshop aimed to inspire ICU students interested both in quantitative analysis and in developing their career abroad. We asked Dr. Sato to tell us more about her project.
2017-18 JICUF Study Abroad Scholars Return to Japan
In 2017, JICUF awarded Study Abroad Scholarships to five students with excellent academic standing. These students studied at ICU’s partner institutions in the United States and have recently returned to Japan. Three of the five students shared comments about their time in the U.S.
