Report from ICU
A couple of times per year I have the privilege of visiting ICU. This year, I was fortunate enough to schedule my first visit in early April during sakura season.
In Japan, the blooming sakura tree symbolizes the arrival of spring, but also the ephemeral nature of life, or mono no aware. It is fitting that the entrance to ICU is lined with sakura, because for most students their time at ICU is short and full of beautiful experiences. Indeed, I have been reminded of the strong impact of an ICU education throughout my visit, whether observing a peace mediation course, watching the ICU Soccer Club practice, or meeting JICUF scholarship recipients.
My visit has numerous objectives. The main objectives include holding a reception for the recipients of the JICUF’s new Grants for Students and Grants for Faculty initiatives, meeting with students and faculty interested in applying for future grants and finalizing the planning for the upcoming Rethinking Peace Studies conference. I have also had the opportunity to meet with President Junko Hibiya and her staff, with JICUF scholarship recipients and also had a short tour of a model room for a new dormitory under construction.
Every time I visit ICU, I am reminded of the important role this university plays within Japan and the broader world. It truly is a remarkable institution.
