ICU student Mariko Kawasaki was one of the recipients of the 2021 JICUF Study Abroad Scholarship last year. Mariko studied at the University of California, and has recently completed her study abroad program. We asked her some questions about her time at UC.
JICUF has helped recruit seven Syrian students through the Syrian Scholars Initiative. This year marks the final year of student recruitment for SSI, and we will continue to support refugee and displaced students through other means, including funding the Japanese Language School Pathways program administered by the NPO Pathways Japan.
This year’s JICUF Undergraduate Research Day (URD) will take place on Friday, February 25. Graduating fourth year students at ICU will present their research in an online format. The event is open to all. We interviewed ICU fourth year student Le Xuan Chan, who is the Chief Ambassador for this year’s URD.
JICUF recently recruited two ICU students, Kira Taylor and Rika Asakura, as our first Communications Interns. Their main responsibility is to disseminate information about the opportunities that JICUF provides to current ICU students, and with their help, we launched the JICUF official LINE account!
Current ICU undergraduate students Nanako Yaguchi, Stiven Horita, and Mia Fosco, as well as March 2021 graduate Manami Sekine will host the next session of the JICUF Global Alumni Speaker Series on Tuesday, May 25. The students attended one of the past sessions of the series, and approached JICUF about hosting their own session. They decided to invite 2015 graduate Honami Iizuka as the speaker.
Ms. Jessica Cork studied at ICU from 1995 to 1996 as an “OYR” (“One Year Regular,” or exchange student) when she was an undergraduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After graduation, she joined the JET program and worked for the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta for over a decade. She is currently Vice President of Community Engagement and Communications in the YKK Corporation of America. Ms. Cork shares career advice based on her experiences with current students and recent graduates.
The national round of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition was held in February, and the ICU team won third place overall. Two students placed third and fourth in oral presentation separately. Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Hiromichi Matsuda, ICU students have been competing in moot court competition for the last several years.
JICUF launched an official Instagram page in January. We introduce student photographer Ryota Nakanishi, who will contribute photos of the ICU campus every Thursday.
JICUF has been exploring ways to continue supporting the ICU community in a drastically changed environment. We are excited to announce three new initiatives: the Global Alumni Speakers Series, Japan and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the Common Good Grant Project.
